November 2009
With the continuing debate over what type of recession we are experiencing, and in what shape the economy, and organisations, might eventually emerge, we thought you would be interested to see the latest Trends in Board Turnover, a quarterly analysis we conduct in conjunction with Boardex.
The more detailed analysis over three years is attached, but the headlines are:
In the first three quarters of 2009, against the same period in 2008, in the FTSE 350:
- Overall Executive Director turnover is down 9%
- CEO turnover is down 50%
- NED turnover up 25%
There has been some discussion elsewhere that the overall number of NED positions and/or individuals holding those roles has shrunk in recent months and that this is a trend which may develop over the next period. We have therefore decided to track overall patterns in this respect.
As a starting point therefore, looking at the current number of NED roles, it is interesting to note that at the end of September 2009:
- In the FTSE 100, 748 NED positions are held by 660 individuals
- In the FTSE 350, 2077 NED positions are held by 1712 individuals
- The overall number of NED positions in the FTSE 350 has increased by 34, or 1.6%, since September 2008
